We had no choice but to ride 109 miles in a tow truck as Thrifty Car Rental was unable to provide a viable alternative solution such as rent another car from Enterprise Rental Car. I explained without the passports we could not get on our flight back to Canada. I voiced my complaints on Thrifty's customer service/complaint email when we returned to the US, but they told me they had no jurisdiction over Thrifty in Costa Rica - even though they publish the prices on their website. The person paying was furious, as now they had to pay double the money after they had been told they did not have to pay a fee to swap drivers. I called to extremes this and avoid a charge and this charge was not on the ticket I was given but hidden away on a page I did not sign and these are charges for which I had not agreed to pay. I was out of time so I had to go ahead with the car rental and it end up costing me about 125 more than what I was planning. Very poor experience with this company - never again. The fuel gauge says full.
The whole experience has left a sour taste in my mouth, in my opinion, Thrifty/Dollar are not transparent with their pricing and feel that their entire goal is to squeeze as much money out of their customers as they can. All of which, Thrifty Rental Car was unwilling to assist or compensate in any way. Knowing I had already rented the car Thrifty went ahead and charged me anyways.
We contacted Thrifty on a 30 minute international call, where they also were unaware that the South Beach location was not open and we were told that we could get a car from the airport. They admitted the mistake, but won't post the refund, not send anything in writing (email nor text) of this resolve. I will never do business with these thieves again. They also told us we could switch primary drivers when the driver we wanted arrived, which will be important later. They run a credit check and I have fair credit. When I explained what occurred, one employee (obviously a new one) said your tank is full. As soon as we got to the hotel I noticed a dent in the front fender. They may be the cheapest but they will do absolutely nothing if you have any issues with your hired car. I called corporate customer service and they don't seem to care much either. It was suggested that I pull over and wait until the engine cools which we readily complied. I will use my State Farm insurance and plus I already purchase a 9 dollar per day coverage. They also sell you toll vouchers for places that will not even have tolls and then charge you for nothing that you used! When we went back after 8 days to take the second driver off they said, "No you have to pay the second driver rate until the car is returned." We finally worked out an agreement after talking to the supervisor. When I did return the car at the end of the rental period I wanted to pay the remainder of what I owed and they said, "No you must wait and we will send it by email." I am just waiting to see if they.
Thrifty in the DomRep: "You won't like." After holidays I questioned. We won't be renting from them again. Get to looking at paperwork and don't see credit for prepay and ended up paying well over 3 times initial online price. Once was too much.
